Driven grouse shooting
Experience one of the most exciting and challenging birds in the world
Driven grouse shooting
The most exciting and challenging driven bird shooting
Grouse shooting in the UK starts on “The Glorious 12th”, i.e., 12th August, and takes place on the moors in northern England and Scotland. Their wildness together with their exceptional agility and speed make for some of the most exciting and challenging shooting in the world.
The name “driven shoot” refers to the way in which the grouse are walked, or driven, towards the line of guns by beaters who move in formation towards the line of guns, driving the birds on and over the line of guns.
There are generally 8-10 guns in the shooting line, spaced roughly 50 yards apart standing in butts. The guns need to remain still and concealed for as long as possible as grouse are known to have extremely good eyesight and will avoid danger wherever they detect it. For that reason, sombre colour clothing is always recommended when shooting grouse.

GENERAL INTINERARY ON A DRIVEN GROUSE DAY
Guns assemble at 8.45/9.00am to be greeted with coffee and at times bacon sandwiches or pastery. The Shoot Captain will hold a safety briefing and then Guns draw for pegs. If loaders/instructors have been arranged, then they now introduce themselves and takes care of your shooting equipment. We move off for the first drive(s) either in the estate gunbus or in 4×4 vehicles. After a few hours shooting we stop for some refreshing Elevenses in the field. Shooting commences and we shoot one drive prior stopping for lunch generally in a shoot lodge on the moor. Lunch in most cases consist of two courses accompanied by fine wines, sometimes followed by a cheese platter and port. After lunch shooting continues, normally for one or two additional afternoon drives. We end the day with afternoon tea and meet the Headkeeper who will inform about the day’s bag. On departure each Gun receives a brace of birds to enjoy at home.
Later in the year, or due to the weather, it is possible we will choose to shoot through and end the day with lunch.
